Unchared Waters

About this year's theme

The COVID-19 pandemic has swept across the globe, throwing our lives into disarray. With entire nations under lockdown and over a million lives lost, the livelihoods of many around the globe have been unduly disrupted. Increasingly, we look to science to grapple with the challenges and uncertainty brought about by the pandemic.

In light of these constraints, ISYF is going digital! The theme for ISYFdigital 2021 is “Post-Pandemic Science: Navigating Uncharted Waters”, which highlights the evolving role of science in the new normal that we are currently living in. Now, more than ever, we are dependent on scientific innovations to help us address the new challenges brought about by the COVID‐19 pandemic. With every second being crucial in saving lives, the progress of scientific research has been accelerated to develop a cure for the virus. While nations closed their borders, scientists shattered boundaries, creating opportunities for unprecedented international cooperation.

The pandemic has also accelerated the digital shift in our modern society. The pace of our work, education and socialization into the digital space is seeing a major acceleration and may change core aspects of our identities, as well as how we work, learn, and engage. While we grapple with social distancing policies such as international border closures and lockdowns, we are also racing against time to find and dispatch a safe and effective vaccine. Science is the shining star that helps us navigate through dark waters. As we look towards a post-pandemic world, we can start asking ourselves some pertinent questions. In what ways has the pandemic affected scientific progress? Which areas of research are emerging now, and which others have become less relevant? After this tumultuous journey ends, what will be the state of the world that we live in when we step onto new shores? The challenge of humanity now is how to best reap the fruits of science to prepare us for the opportunities of the future, in our quest to conquer new frontiers.

Objectives

Objectives

Inspire Passion for Science Among Youth

ISYF aims to provide high-ability students with ample opportunities to share and discuss their interest in science, technology and science research. They will be exposed to many fields of science which will broaden their outlook and understanding of the scientific world. Nobel Laureates and eminent scientists will inspire them through stories of their own life experiences and scientific discoveries. These interactions will help create greater awareness among the youth about the importance of broad-based knowledge, keen curiosity, relentless tenacity and a global outlook when considering pursuing science as a meaningful and fulfilling endeavour.

Establish Cooperation and Friendship amongst Young Talented Science Students

Students will have many opportunities to interact in different cross-cultural groups and form strong bonds with each other throughout the forum. Activities are designed to promote mutual cooperation, understanding and appreciation of each others’ diverse cultures while sharing a common passion in science, technology and research.

Raise Singapore's profile as an International Hub for Science Education and Research

Through engaging with Singapore’s own research scientists, ISYFdigital gives participants first-hand insight into Singapore’s innovative capabilities, and an overview of the educational and research scene that supports these scientific endeavours.
